What is Clean Beauty?

Clean beauty focuses on upholding a lifestyle that involves the creation & regular use of skin & bodycare products that do the job while prioritizing the health of people and the planet. Its formulations do not use ingredients that, through scientific studies, point to having human and environmental health hazards.

Common ingredients that should NOT be found in clean beauty products

Phthalates

  • Softens plastic acts as solvents & fixatives in fragrances
  • Damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs, and reproductive system, causes adverse effects to infants and children, such as allergies, premature puberty, eczema, asthma, and is suspected to cause lowered IQ, and ADHD

Sulphates

  • Detergents, emulsifiers, and foaming agents
  • Dries skin, irritates the lungs, and affects your lung health

Paraffin

  • Used as lubricant, candles, petroleum jelly, and balms.
  • Releases carcinogenic substances, linked to lung cancer and pancreatic cancer, causes skin irritations and eczema, causes respiratory problems when inhaled continuously even through candles, contributes to air pollution & can trigger asthma

Parabens

  • Preservatives
  • Can disrupt hormones in the body and harm fertility and reproductive organs, affects birth outcomes, and increases the risk of cancer, can also cause skin irritation

Formaldehyde

  • Preservatives, straighteners, hardeners: hair products & nail lacquers
  • Can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat, may cause some types of cancers, skin rashes, shortness of breath, wheezing, and changes in lung function

Oxybenzone

  • Products with sunscreens
  • Disruptor to corals, it also causes hormone disruption in humans, affecting estrogen production, particularly in women, and testosterone production in men

Toluene

  • Solvent for paints, lacquers, thinners, and adhesives.
  • Can cause eye and nose irritation, tiredness, confusion, euphoria, dizziness, headache, dilated pupils, tears, anxiety, muscle fatigue, insomnia, nerve damage, inflammation of the skin, and liver and kidney damage.

Triclosan

  • Antibacterial
  • Abnormal endocrine system/thyroid hormone signaling, weakening of immune system, increased chance of developing allergies, asthma, and eczema in children. uncontrolled cell growth, developmental and reproductive toxicity

PEG

  • Penetration enhancers are substances that make it easier for other ingredients to pass through the skin.
  • Found in formulations containing other toxic ingredients, those ingredients could more readily enter the body. Reported adverse effects from PEG include central nervous system (CNS) toxicity, cardiac arrhythmia, and seizures.

Synthetic Dyes

  • To color
  • Irritates sensitive skin, clogs pores, linked to thyroid tumors and other allergic reactions

DEA, TEA, MEA

  • Emulsifiers, foaming agents
  • Irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract, can form nitrosamines that will be hormone disruptors, carcinogenic, and can contribute to liver tumors, organ toxicity, developmental abnormalities
