Essential Oils are often spoken about, but rarely understood. In this first entry, we explore where they come from, how they're made, and why purity, sourcing, and thoughtful use matter more than trends.

THE CLEAN EDIT is an ongoing educational series by For Keeps—created to break down clean beauty practices with clarity, care, and intention. No fear tactics, no overclaims. Just thoughtful information to help you make more informed choices, for yourself and the world around you.

What Essential Oils Are
Borrowing from nature.

Essential oils come from flowers, leaves, wood, and roots. Plants produce them for survival: protection, reproduction, and healing. These same functions are what we borrow when we thoughtfully use essential oils.

Purity Matters
Pure, or altered?

Because essential oils are shaped by season, soil, and climate, natural variation is expected. What matters is purity. Oils can be altered to adjust aroma, volume, or cost, but we believe in oils in their truest, unadulterated form.

Where They’re Grown
Origin shapes potency

Where a plant grows directly affects the quality of its oil. We prefer essential oils that are sourced from plants grown and harvested in their native environments, where balance, potency, and resilience naturally develop.

Safety & Intention
Powerful by nature

Essential oils are powerful. They have the ability to protect, attract, and heal a plant. These naturally occur in small quantities within a plant for a reason. A little goes a long way. When misused, they can irritate or overwhelm. But when formulated with knowledge and restraint, they offer benefit while remaining gentle and safe.

Our Approach
Clean as care

For Keeps approaches clean beauty as care—for the body, the plant, and the earth. We use pure essential oils, thoughtfully sourced and carefully dosed, to support long-term wellness without excess.
